The one thing this country star coming to Dayton never imagined

Vince Gill has worked with his share of musical heavyweights, from Merle Haggard to his wife, Amy Grant. However, the multi-award-winning country singer, performing at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights on Tuesday, June 20, never imagined he’d be filling in for the late Glenn Frey in the Eagles.

“I never saw that coming in a million years,” Gill said. “The music of the Eagles was everything to me when I was younger. They’re the best American band in history to me because their songs are so great. I knew them all as a kid. I learned them all and played them so it’s fun 40-plus years later to get to go play these songs with those guys.

“It’s bittersweet because I realize this is only happening because of, sadly, the passing of Glenn,” Gill continued. “That’s first and foremost in my heart. I’m trying to honor an old friend and help out some other old friends that can use some help. People love hearing these songs and I, for one, think they should always be played. I’m grateful to get the opportunity to help them out.”

Before he joins the Eagles for concerts in July, Gill will remain focused on his latest tour.

>> DINING: Places to eat, grab a drink before the concert

“I always want it to be a good experience for people when they come and see us play,” he said. “You want them to walk away and go, ‘That was a good show, I’d go see that again.’ I’ve had enough success that it can sustain me through all of these years of not being current on radio or any of those types of things. I’ve got enough history where I can continue to get to do this.”

Earlier this year, Gill scored his 21st Grammy Award for “Kid Sister,” a song with the old-timey band the Time Jumpers. It was that group’s first win and was about the group’s late singer, Dawn Sears, who died of cancer in 2014.

“It was special to win a Grammy with those guys, especially because it was a special song,” Gill said. “It was song of the year and it was a song I wrote for Dawn Sears, who is one of the best singers I ever heard. She was the focal point for the Time Jumpers for a long, long time so we’ve been a little bit lost since she passed away two-and-a-half years ago.

“We’re just trying to soldier forward and keep playing and figuring things out,” Gill added. “It was really sweet for those guys to finally see that happen.”

Big & Rich are known for their high-energy shows, and thrilling crowds across the country. They are America’s technicolor cowboys, brothers-in-arms in service to the creed that great music has no boundaries. Individually, John and Big Kenny are first-rate musicians, songwriters, producers, and entertainers. Together, they are one of the most truly original musical forces ever unleashed on a welcoming world. They are sure to put on a unique and energetic show with their one-of-a-kind vocal blend and musical styles drawing fans from all genres and ages. Their latest single “California” is out now with the full album, Did It For The Party , to be released later this year. Some of their hit songs include “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” “8th of November,” “Run Away with You,” “Lovin’ Lately” and “Comin’ to Your City.”

Country singer and songwriter Trent Tomlinson is not the sensitive balladeer type. As influenced by the outlaw country movement of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, Tomlinson is at least as committed to the honky tonk hell-raiser life as he is to the sweeter side of Nashville. His songs include “One Wing In The Fire,” “Drunker Than Me,” “When She Goes There,” and “Just Might Have Her Radio On.”
