Notre Dame dismisses starting safety, suspends cornerback after weekend arrests

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that he had dismissed starting safety Max Redfield and suspended cornerback Devin Butler indefinitely after both were arrested in separate incidents in Indiana over the weekend.

Redfield was a two-year starter who was fourth on the team in tackles last season. He also faces an additional charge for possession of a handgun without a license.

Four other four players arrested with Redfield on misdemeanor possession of marijuana will be disciplined internally, Kelly announced. University officials could impose more penalties on top of what the athletic department decides.

In a separate incident, Butler was arrested during a bar fight between two women. According to police, Butler was asked to move back and the player “shouted profanities at the officers and starting swinging his fist.” One officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including a sore wrist.

Kelly issued a strongly worded statement on Sunday.

“There are times when a player’s conduct fails to meet the standards I have set for our football team that it is appropriate to take action independent of any decision that might be made by the Office of Community Standards,” Kelly said. “This is such an instance.”

From a football perspective, Kelly’s decision will hurt the Irish secondary. With Redfield now gone, freshman Devin Studstill is projected to start. His backup is also a freshman. Butler was still rehabilitating a broken foot injury suffered in June. He was not expected to play until October.

No. 10 Notre Dame opens the season against Texas on Sept. 4.

Tim Tebow pursuing professional baseball career, report says

Nearly a year after Tim Tebow last appeared on an NFL roster, the former quarterback is "actively pursuing a career in professional baseball," his agents told ESPN.

Jimmy Sexton and Nick Khan told the sports station that Tebow has been training in Arizona and Los Angeles for the last year and plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams later this month.

"Tim's athletic ability, his work ethic, his leadership and his competitiveness were evident in football and will show in baseball," Sexton told ESPN. "Knowing Tim's passion and desire, we won't be surprised by anything he accomplishes."

Although the report might sound like it's coming out of left field, Tebow actually came close to becoming a professional baseball player before he joined the NFL.

"We wanted to draft him but he never sent back his information card," Red Sox Florida area scout Tom Kotchman, who previously worked with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, told WEEI in 2013. "Either it never got to him or it's Tim Tebow. Who knows if it got to him, and if it did we just never got it back. Otherwise (the Angels) were going to take him."

Tebow played baseball while attending Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida. He didn't play his senior year, but as a junior he hit .494, according to an report. He earned all-state honors that year and led the team to the final four of the Florida state playoffs.

"I believe he could have played in the big leagues," Nease coach Greg "Boo" Mullins said, according to the report. Tebow went for football over baseball because "he just had a bigger fire" for the sport, Mullins said.

All 30 teams in Major League Baseball will be invited to his workout at the end of the month, according to ESPN.

NFL punts on Hall of Fame game because the field was 'like taffy'

If you're one of the millions of Americans anxiously awaiting the return of football, you're going to have to keep waiting.

The NFL's Hall of Fame game, which is the official start of the NFL preseason, was canceled because the field is in such poor shape.

"From what I've been told, the wrong paint was used, and if you could get out there and see it, it had dried. It was very sticky. It was very gummy. It was almost like taffy," reporter Lisa Salters said on ESPN.

That would be very unsafe. Cleats could get caught up in the gunk and cause a nasty leg injury, which is the last thing anyone wants in a preseason game.

The NFL issued a statement, saying, "We are very disappointed for our fans, but player safety is our primary concern, and as a result, we could not play an NFL game on this field tonight."

The Hall of Fame's president said the fans who had hoped to attend will be given a refund. Football-starved fans will have to wait until Thursday for the preseason to actually start.

Tim Tebow the latest athlete to pass on Republican National Convention

On Wednesday, The New York Times reported Tim Tebow was slated to speak at the Republican National Convention. Now the Heisman-winning quarterback says that's just hearsay.

"I wake up this morning to find out that I'm speaking at the Republican National Convention. It's amazing how fast rumors fly. And that's exactly what it is: a rumor," Tebow said in an Instagram video

A video posted by Tim Tebow (@timtebow) on Jul 14, 2016 at 5:42pm PDT<script async defer src="//"></script>

Before Tebow posted that video, Instagram users blasted him over his alleged political leanings.

In June, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump said an entire night of the convention might be dedicated to famous athletes speaking on his behalf. Now it's tough to nail down exactly which, if any, sports stars will attend.

So far, the only athletics-related speaker who's confirmed they'll speak at the convention is UFC President Dana White.

Bloomberg reported boxer Mike Tyson might give a speech, which Trump denied. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said he was a friend of Trump's, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Brady won't be speaking, either.

Lots of major Republican politicians have passed on not only speaking at the convention but attending it altogether. Notable figures like Trey Gowdy, Sarah Palin and Marco Rubio will all be absent when the convention kicks off on July 18.

Jaguars running back Denard Robinson found asleep in car sinking in pond

Action News Jax contributed to this report.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson was found passed out behind the wheel of his Chevy Impala on Sunday while police said it was slipping into a pond.

According to police, Robinson was found in the car around 4:20 a.m. while its front end sunk into a retention pond, The Washington Post reported. Police said they knocked on the window to try to wake Robinson up, but he only responded by opening his eyes for a moment and returning to his slumber.

Marissa Staples, the passenger in the car, woke up and said “what’s up” to police but attempted to roll it back up even after being informed of the situation. Police continued to knock on the vehicle’s windows and were able to unlock the passenger door. Staples had to be pulled from the car after refusing to leave, the arrest report stated.

"The driver was passed out during this whole process. I was able to wake the driver but had to turn the vehicle off and remove his seatbelt. The driver thought he was on a road and did not want to exit the vehicle," the report said.

Police said Robinson, 25, was woken up after the vehicle was turned off and Staples was pulled from the car, Action News Jax reported. Police said Robinson finally exited through the passenger window when his door was submerged.

"The driver tried about three times to open the driver’s door which was the side that was underwater," one officer stated in a police report. "I had to keep reminding the driver to climb out of the passenger side because his door was in the water. I had to tell the driver multiple times his car was in a pond and was sinking so he needed to hurry up and get out."

Robinson told police that he thought the vehicle was still on the road, which is why he didn’t exit.

Authorities said that Robinson was attempting to make a left turn and made a wide turn, "causing the vehicle to go over the sidewalk and down the embankment."

"There were no skid marks indicating the driver attempted to stop the vehicle before the crash," according to the report.

Robinson posted a note on Twitter saying that he was involved in a crash with no injuries, and the Jaguars issued a statement saying that they were aware of the incident.

A police officer determined that Robinson wasn't impaired, so no DUI charges were filed against him, according to ESPN.

Robinson's car was totaled.

Robinson was a fifth-round pick by the Jaguars in the 2013 NFL draft after playing at the University of Michigan, following a successful high school career at Deerfield Beach High School.

The Celtics are one of five teams Durant is entertaining this weekend, including the Warriors, Clippers, Spurs and Heat.

Durant is expected to receive a max contract from whichever team he chooses.

Big Papi sent a tweet Saturday saying, “Yo @KDTrey5 sorry I couldn't make the meeting today but Brady will tell u they don't call Boston the City of Champions for nothing.”
