Even the most complex, seemingly insurmountable challenges can have positive outcomes. International OD expert Dr. Ilma Barros will describe how she has used such approaches as Appreciative Inquiry and Theory U to facilitate multi-stakeholder, large-scale OD projects. For example, in South America, she helped bring together more than 5,000 people --- including doctors, industrialists, philantropists, non-profit specialists, political, and government officials --- from 11 national organizations in the Brazilian state of Parana to explore health services, social responsibility, the environment, industrial development, and education. After a one-day summit, the group spent five months implementing several change initiatives. Top government leaders, including Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, took part in the project's closing ceremony and were signficantly impressed by the process and scope of the outcomes. Dr. Barros is a research fellow with The Fowler Center for Sustainable Enterprise at Case Western Reserve University and a member of the Presencing Institute, where she works directly with thought leaders Peter Senge and Otto Scharmer.
