Directed by James Olcott
The program will highlight two ensembles, a large ensemble featuring 13 players and a smaller group with five trumpeters and jazz rhythm section. Repertoire for the larger ensemble will feature works from the baroque to the present, with the emotional centerpiece of America the Beautiful based on the famous arrangement by Carmon Dragon and transcribed for the group by Olcott. Jazz will be featured by the smaller group with works by Shorty Rogers, Neal Hefty, and Phil Fields, among others.
The Miami University Trumpet Ensemble was formed in the spring of 1983 by Olcott. The group has performed at the International Brass Congress in Bloomington, Indiana, at seven meetings of the International Trumpet Guild (Ohio chapter), and was the first group of its kind to perform at an Ohio Association of Music Educators Convention where it has been featured three times. The ensemble has also performed an Artists and Lectures Series Concert at Miami University-Middletown with the Queen City Brass, played at the prestigious New York Brass Conference for Scholarships, performed with the Whitewater Opera Company of Richmond, Indiana in performances of Verdi's Aida, and was a featured ensemble at Brassfest, the joint International Trumpet Guild/Summit Brass international conference in Bloomington, Indiana.
