On July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country.   • Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar, who perhaps came most into prominence when he worked with George Harrison of the Beatles, died on Dec. 11 at the age of 92.
  • Jenni Rivera, an American-born singer who became a huge star in Mexico, died on Dec. 9 in a plane crash at the age of 43.

  • Jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, known best for helping create and popularize the
  • Mickey Baker, a guitarist who was a guiding force in rock and roll and had a major hit in Mickey & Sylvia with 'Love Is Strange', died on Nov. 27 at the age of 87.
  • Larry Hagman, best known for his roles as J.R. Ewing on 'Dallas' and as Maj. Anthony Nelson on 'I Dream of Jeannie', died on Nov. 24 at the age of 81.
  • Art Ginsburg, a chef and author known best for his 'Mr. Food' segments on local TV news broadcasts, died on Nov. 21 at the age of 81. Ginsburg was known for ending his segments with the catch phrase
  • Actress Deborah Raffin, known best for her role in the miniseries 'Noble House', died on Nov. 21 at the age of 59. Raffin later became a publisher of audiobooks.
  • Major Harris, an R&B singer known for his top-10 single 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' who also spent time in the group The Delfonics, died on Nov. 9 at the age of 65.
  • Native American activist Russell Means, who died on Oct. 22 at the age of 72, also appeared in several movies in his lifetime, including 'Last of the Mohicans' and 'Natural Born Killers'.
  • Actress Sylvia Kristel, best known for her starring role in the film 'Emmanuelle', died on Oct. 17 at the age of 60.
  • Gary Collins, an actor, television host and former master of ceremonies for the Miss America Pageant, died on Oct. 13 at the age of 74.
  • Alex Karras (left), here with 'Saturday Night Live' cast member Billy Crystal and singer Tina Turner during a rehearsal for a 1985 epsiode, died on Oct. 10 at the age of 77. Karras gained fame as a feared defensive lineman with the Detroit Lions before becoming an actor and appearing in the films 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Porky's' and the sitcom 'Webster', among other roles.
  • Actor Herbert Lom, best known for playing Dreyfus in the Pink Panther series of movies, died on Sept. 27 at the age of 95.
  • Actor Johnny Lewis, best known for his role on 'Sons of Anarchy', died on Sept. 26 at the age of 28.
  • Singer and TV host Andy Williams, best known for the song 'Moon River' as well as a number of TV specials, died on Sept. 25 at the age of 84.
  • Steve Sabol, the co-founder of NFL Films along with his father Ed Sabol, died on Sept. 18 at the age of 69.
  • Dorothy McGuire, seen here with sisters Christine and Phyllis, died on Sept. 7 at the age of 84. The McGuire Sisters had several hit songs in the 1950s, including the chart-topping hits 'Sincerely' and 'Sugartime'.
  • Singer/songwriter Joe South, who wrote such hit singles as 'Down in the Boondocks' and '(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden' and had hits of his own including 'Games People Play', died on Sept. 5. He was 72.
  • Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, seen here attending a Miami Heat game in 2011, died on Sept. 3 at the age of 54. Duncan was known for his roles in 'The Green Mile' and 'Daredevil.'
  • Hal David, the lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach to write such pop-music classics as 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose' and 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head', died on Sept. 1 at the age of 91.
  • Jerry Nelson, who performed Muppet characters on 'Sesame Street', 'The Muppet Show', 'Fraggle Rock' and more, died on Aug. 23 at the age of 78.
  • In this 1985 file photo, Comedian Phyllis Diller gets a lift from emcee Buddy Hackett prior to the celebrity stag luncheon roast at the New York Friars Club in New York City. Diller died on Aug. 20 at the age of 95.
  • Tony Scott, who directed such blockbuster movie hits as 'Top Gun', 'Beverly Hills Cop II', 'Crimson Tide' and 'True Romance', died on Aug. 19 at the age of 68.
  • Singer Scott McKenzie (center, with the group The Mamas and the Papas), best known for his single 'San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers in Your Hair)' and the writer of the Beach Boys' hit 'Kokomo', died on Aug. 18 at the age of 73.
  • Joey Kovar, who appeared in the cast of 'The Real World Hollywood' in 2008, died on Aug. 17 at the age of 29.
  • Actor William Windom, best known for his roles on 'Murder She Wrote' and 'My World and Welcome To It', died on Aug. 16 at the age of 88.
  • Longtime 'Cosmopolitan' publisher Helen Gurley Brown, also known for her book 'Sex and the Single Girl', died on Aug. 13 at the age of 90.
  • Mel Stuart, the director of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', died on Aug. 9 at the age of 83.
  • Film critic and essayist Judith Crist, seen here in 1967, died on Aug. 7. She was 90.
  • Marvin Hamlisch, a composer who was honored with three Oscars and four Emmy Awards, died on Aug. 6 at the age of 68.
  • Author Gore Vidal, known as much for his wit and personality as his essays, novels and screenplays, died on July 31 at the age of 86.
  • Author Maeve Binchy, known for her humorous take on her homeland of Ireland, died at the age of 72 on July 30.
  • Actor Chad Everett, best known for his role on the TV series 'Medical Center', died on July 26 at the age of 75.
  • Sherman Hemsley, best known for his role as George Jefferson on the 1970s TV series 'The Jeffersons' and seen here with his 'Jeffersons' co-star Isebel Sanford, died on July 26 at the age of 74.
  • Tom Davis, best known as an early performer and longtime writer with the NBC late-night series 'Saturday Night Live', died on July 19 at the age of 59.
  • Kitty Wells, the first female superstar of country music, died at the age of 92. She became the first woman solo artist to hit No. 1 on the country chats with 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels' in 1952.
  • Bob Babbitt, the bass player for the Funk Brothers session band, died on July 16 at the age of 74. The Funk Brothers were the backing musicians for most of Motown Records' biggest hits. Babbitt joined the Funk Brothers in 1967, joining James Jamerson as the group's bass players.
  • Jon Lord, the longtime keyboardist for the classic rock group Deep Purple, died on July 16 at the age of 72.
  • Celeste Holm, an Academy Award-winning actress who also was in the original Broadway cast of 'Oklahoma!' as Ado Annie, died on July 15 at the age of 95.
  • Film producer Richard Zanuck, who won the best picture Oscar for
