Originally named the Cox Arena, the Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl was constructed in 1997 as a replacement to the Aztec Bowl football stadium (Aztec football is now at Qualcomm Stadium). Currently, tickets have been flying out of the box office for the recently successful men's and women's San Diego State Aztec basketball teams, as well as the school's commencement ceremonies. Viejas Arena also schedules some of the biggest musicians in the country, and audiences drive from all over San Diego County for shows. Its location on the 8 freeway, just east of the 15, best accommodates visitors from East County and Hillcrest/Normal Heights area, but people are more than willing to make the trip for the venue's spacious design, ample parking, and, of course, stellar lineups.
