Collaboration is pretty much the way of the world among Nashville songwriters -- in fact, only four of the Top 25 current country singles were written by a solo composer, as reported by theboot.com.
One of those songs is Josh Turner's "Everything Is Fine," though Josh doesn't only write alone. He plays mix and match between co-writing and working on his own, and it turns out that the two approaches kind of feed each other.
"Lately," he says, "I've been writin' with other people. A lot of times that kind of gives me a jump start into writin' on my own. Writin' with other people helps me realize what I can do with another writer and what I can't do with another writer."
Much of what will and won't work with somebody else comes down to how much Josh wants to share on a particular topic. When two or more people lock up in a room to write a song, they end revealing a lot more than actually goes down on the paper, and sometimes the topic is one that Josh would rather explore in thought than talk about with someone else.
"There's a lot of times where I'll hold a certain idea back from sharin' it with another writer and keep it to myself," he says. "It may be something that's extremely personal that somebody I'm writin' with may not be able to relate to. It can be pretty tricky. You have to play your cards right."
Josh knew what he was doing with "Everything Is Fine." It edged into the Top 20 this week on the USA Today Mediabase country singles chart. And it's a full-circle experience for him: Josh's very first hit was also one he wrote on his own, "Long Black Train."
