Kellie Pickler Helps Beavercreek Family

By Nancy Wilson

Thursday, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition landed in Beavercreek to tell James Terpenning, a wheelchair sports champion and mentor to disabled Iraqi War veterans, that he and his family will have a newly rebuilt home in seven days. James, a computer specialist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is known at work and in the community as an inspirational role model who always helps others but never asks for help for himself.  A Three-Star Air Force General nominated James for "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," believing this humble man's selfless service and patriotism deserves to be rewarded.

Crippled by polio during infancy, and abandoned by his American G.I. father in Vietnam, James nevertheless considers himself one of the luckiest people in the world. He was supposed to be airlifted out of Vietnam on a military plane that crashed, killing all the children and aid workers aboard. Instead, he had safe passage, leading to a new life in America as an adopted son in an Ohio family. While growing up, James competed in wheelchair sports and later represented the U.S. at the Paralympics, where he earned both gold and silver medals. He continues to serve his country in civilian technical support for the Air Force and by helping veterans with disabilities. James also is a frequent speaker at schools, educating children and teens about living with special challenges.

O

ver and above the many veterans and schoolchildren who have been touched by James's inspirational outreach, no one knows the boundless strength of James's character and compassion better than his wife, Shannon, and his adopted brother, Peter. Shannon, an active volunteer, is a stay-at-home mom to their four children: Josselyn, age 6; twins Justin and Jacob, age 2; and Joshua, age 1. Peter, who has cerebral palsy, had been placed in a group home after his mother had died. That wasn't tolerable for James, who brought his brother to live with his family. Now three adults, including two with special needs, and four young children all share space in a cramped, three-bedroom house that could be improved for wheelchair accessibility.

The Terpenning family are on vacation to the Disney World while the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team, local builder Coventry Homes, workers and volunteers transform their home.

The design team for this episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will feature team leader Ty Pennington and designers Michael Moloney, Ed Sanders and Didiayer Snyder.

Kellie Pickler established herself quickly as both a singer and a songwriter to be reckoned with, co-writing her first hit, Red High Heels, her first gold single. Her debut album, Small Town Girl, produced two follow-up hits--the poignant I Wonder, which she also co-wrote, and the light-hearted Things That Never Cross A Man's Mind. Together, they propelled the release to near-platinum status.

Kellie Pickler is the celebrity volunteer for this build and will perform her new single at the family's reveal.

The location address is: The Terpenning Family 548 Carthage Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45434
