Montgomery Gentry Makes Grand Ole Opry

By Nancy Wilson

Montgomery Gentry's appearance on the Tuesday night edition of the Grand Ole Opry this week came with a special added attraction: the duo was invited to become the Opry's newest member. Current Opry member Charlie Daniels surprised Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry while they were on stage during the show to issue the prestigious invite.

"I have been chosen to do something very special," Charlie said as he approached the pair. "I have known you guys for a long time, and I am very proud of all your accomplishments. If you agree to it, on June 23rd you're gonna be made members of the Grand Ole Opry!"

The Kentucky duo made their debut in 1999 with 'Hillbilly Shoes,' from their album 'Tattoos and Scars.' That album also featured 'All Night Long,' recorded with the Charlie Daniels Band. Other hits for the pair include 'Something to Be Proud Of,' 'Lucky Man,' 'Back When I Knew It All,' and their latest, 'One in Every Crowd,' which they performed just after receiving their Opry invitation.

"Y'all got us!," a still surprised Troy exclaimed to the crowd as the song kicked off.

In 2000, Troy and Eddie were named the CMA Vocal Duo of the Year, unseating Brooks and Dunn after an eight-year winning streak.
