Rowdy J

Hey, there!  I’m Rowdy J.   And I keep you company through the night with today’s new country, and we ever throw in some familiar favorites that everybody loves while you’re at work on the third shift.  I live in Riverside where I own a home and live with my two furballs, Ringo and Midnight Cat.

Where were you born?

Dayton, Ohio

What is your favorite TV show?

Just about anything on the History Channel, or Smithsonian TV.

What was the first thing you ever wanted to be?

Just like a lot of kids, an astronaut.

How might someone have described you in high school?

Quiet and shy…(Yes, I was a nerd.)  It was getting into musical comedies in school that brought me “out of my shell”, which led me into radio at Miamisburg.

What was your first job?

Picking up golf balls on a driving range.  (And NO, not while people were hitting golf balls!)

What was your first job in radio?

Small town DJ and Newsguy in Wilmington, Ohio.

What do you like about your job?

I have always enjoyed the fact that I get paid for playing music and entertaining people on the radio.  It beats just about any job I can think of.

What might people be surprised to know about you?

I love to fly.  I am a student pilot who has soloed in a single engine aircraft.  Would love to finish my pilot’s license, but lately, that’s very expensive.  But, maybe someday…

What would be a perfect day for you?

Sunshine and warm temperatures, so I could get my bike out of the garage and go for a ride.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to go into the business?

Realize that a career in this business is a marathon. You typically start small and slow, but over time you get more responsibility and often, authority.  Never be afraid to take “the next step” and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something…at least not until you’ve done it. Lastly, enjoy what you do.  It makes it a lot easier to get out of bed in the morning.

Favorite book:  First Man (The story of Apollo 11 commander, and Ohio native Neil Armstrong.

Favorite food:  Mac and Cheese. (No kidding.  When I went to Illinois for a job once and discovered the Kraft plant was there, my best friend tried to get a pallet of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese delivered to me at the radio station!)

Favorite hobby:  I program two low powered FM community non-commercial radio stations at Indian Lake and advise another one in Wilmington.

Favorite Miami Valley place: The National Museum of The U.S. Air Force.

Favorite movies:  I love to watch a lot of concert movies, like Garth Brooks’ Central Park concert, or Paul McCartney at the “Concert for America” after 9-11.  Though, not long ago, I watched Deadpool and thought it was almost as funny as it was sick.

Favorite music: Being a lifelong (since age 9) guitar player and musician, I like a lot of different music.  Country (both the old stuff and today’s music), old rock and roll from the 60’s to the 80’s. I was in bands as a teenager until I figured out it was the only business where you could make LESS money than in radio! (J)Lately, I’ve had the pleasure to meet a lot of country songwriters (some who have written some REALLY big hits, and I am amazed at their talents and am proud to be able to call some of them friends.)

Favorite travel destination: I love Tennessee (both Memphis and Nashville…great music meccas in their own right.) and Clearwater, Florida (my grandparents once had a home there), though I don’t get there very often anymore.
