Outrage over 'White History Month' sign in deli window

FLEMINGTON, N.J. —

A sign hanging in a store window celebrating 'White History Month' is causing controversy among the residents of Flemington, New Jersey.

Anyone who passes by Jimbo’s Deli on Main Street can see the sign that reads “Celebrate your white heritage in March. White History Month."

“The ‘white’ had a cross. It was a cross ‘t,’ which is used by the Ku Klux Klan as a symbol, right,” resident Bhakti Curtis tells CBS New York. The 't' in question has since been changed.

Deli owner Jim Boggess says he isn't sure why people would be offended and tells the Hunterdon County Democrat, “No matter what you are — Muslim, Jewish, black, white, gay, straight — you should be proud of what you are. I shouldn’t have to feel bad about being white. I just want to be included. Why is this such a big deal? I don’t get it.”

The sign was removed this week after public backlash.
