A speeding utility truck collided into the back of a semi tractor on Interstate 75 early this morning before erupting into flames.
Both the Miami County Sheriff's Office and Tipp City Police Department saw the dually utility truck speeding at more than 110 m.p.h. in the southbound lanes of I-75 seconds before it crashed into the back of a semi tractor.
Officers and deputies attempted to pull the truck over but it did not comply.
The crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-75 about two miles south of the Ohio 571 exit.
19-year-old James McNulty, a Miami County resident, is now in the Miami County Jail and faces charges of fleeing and eluding, OVI and failure to control. McNulty is expected to be arraigned in court Monday morning.
The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for more than two hours while authorities worked to clear the crash scene. The roadway was opened just before 6 a.m.
McNulty was "heavily intoxicated" when the crash occurred and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash before he was taken to the jail, deputies said.
The truck burst into flames after it hit the semi. Police and deputies who saw the crash said McNulty ran into the semi after he was not able to control his vehicle at the high rate of speed.
The Miami County Sheriff's Office is handling the crash investigation.
