ATTALA COUNTY, Miss. — A Mississippi mother’s recent run-in with the law ended with a charitable act few might expect from those who protect and serve.

“Can I say how good God is?” Niya Sumter began her Nov. 19 Facebook post, detailing her encounter with a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper.

According to Sumter’s post, she was pulled over by trooper Bradley Sanders en route to her son’s doctor’s appointment and received three deserved citations during the stop.

Although neither Sumter nor Sanders specified the tickets he wrote her, the traffic stop was not the end of the story.

Apparently, Sumter’s son, Kaemon, was riding in a “big boy seat” at the time of the stop, which he repeatedly tried to climb out of while Sanders performed his duty.

“He was buckled in, but he wasn’t in the proper car seat, and he was able to freely move around,” Sanders told WAPT, noting that a call he took from his wife while writing Sumter’s citations led him to extend a kindness.

“After giving me my tickets, (Sanders) said, ‘Follow me. Let’s go buy your baby a car seat,’” Sumter wrote in her post.

Sanders told WAPT that Sumter was incredibly grateful for his assistance and told him “she was trying to do the best she could with her son being in the car seat that he was in.”

Sumter took a picture of her son’s gleeful expression as he sat in the store buggy with the new car seat as Sanders stood in the checkout lane, the TV station reported.

“Overwhelmingly, there are great cops out there. Are there a few bad apples out there? I am sure. But most of us got into this profession to help people, as I did myself. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to help,” Sanders told WAPT.
