Kathryn Kates, actress in ‘Orange is the New Black’ and ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ dies at 73

Actress Kathryn Kates, known for her work in “Orange is the New Black,” “Seinfeld” and “Law & Order: SVU” among other television series, died after battling cancer. She was 73.

“After a long, hard-fought battle with lung cancer, Kathryn passed away peacefully this past Saturday surrounded by her brother Josh, his wife Sue Ann and her sister Mallory,” Headline Talent Agency told NBC News in a statement.

The agency posted a remembrance on Instagram as well, saying, “She will always be remembered and adored in our hearts as the powerful force of nature she was. She loved this craft and had enough patience to fill 10 ships. A true icon. We will miss you.”

Kates moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1974 to pursue her acting career, according to the biography on her website. She is best known for playing Jason Biggs’ mother, Amy Kanter-Bloom, on the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” but also had recurring roles on “Law & Order: SVU” as Judge Marlene Simons, and the woman behind the counter in “Seinfeld.”

Kates was also influential in the theater scene, becoming one of the founders of the Colony Theatre in Burbank, CNN reported.
