1 child killed, 10 people wounded in shooting near Chicago intersection

CHICAGO — An 8-year-old child was killed and 10 other people were injured late Saturday after shots were fired in a Chicago neighborhood, authorities said.

Number of injured people rises to 10

Update 12:57 p.m. EDT April 14: Police said Sunday the number of people injured in Saturday night’s shooting in the Back of Yards neighborhood has been revised to 10, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police said Sunday that the girl who died was 8 years old; Don Jerome, Area One Deputy Chief of the Chicago Police Department, said during a news conference late Saturday that the child was 7 and that eight people had been injured.

According to WLS-TV, police said three other children were shot -- a 1-year-boy, who was shot in the abdomen and was in critical condition; an 8-year-old boy, also shot in the abdomen, was in critical condition; and a 9-year-old boy, whose hand was grazed by a bullet.

A 36-year-old man was shot in the arm and back and is in critical condition, according to the television station.

Six other adults wounded during the shooting were in good condition and ranged in age between 19 and 40, the Tribune reported.

“The offenders’ actions, make no mistake, are horrific and unacceptable in our city,” Jerome said Saturday night.

Update 12:40 a.m. EDT April 14: Don Jerome, Area One Deputy Chief of the Chicago Police Department, said during a news conference that eight people were shot at what he described as a family gathering near West 52nd Street and South Damen in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Jerome said that an 7-year-old girl died after she was shot in the head. He added that two boys -- a 1-year-old and 7-year-old -- were in critical condition after they were shot multiple times.

Five adults, ranging in age from 19 to 40 years old, were wounded during the shooting.

“This was not a random attack,” Jerome told reporters, calling the incident gang-related and a “horrific attack.”

Original report: According to officials with the Chicago Fire Department, the shooting occurred near 52nd Street and South Damen in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the city’s South Side, WLS-TV reported.

Authorities were called to the scene at about 9:30 p.m. CDT, WFLD-TV reported.

Details about what led to the shooting or the conditions of the victims have not been released.
