LEGO to move from plastic to paper bags to hold bricks

The boxes of LEGOs may be filled with plastic bricks, but the toy company is removing some plastic to become more ecologically friendly.

The company announced it will be moving from single-use plastic bags to paper bags.

LEGO hopes to have all packaging sustainable by 2025 with trials of recyclable paper bags to start next year.

The company is spending $400 million over the next three years to adjust to its sustainability initiatives.

“We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging. We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change,” CEO Niels B Christiansen said.

The company admits the bags must be durable, but also lightweight and easy to open. Several prototypes have been tested with parents and children.

LEGO has already started to cut down on the amount of plastic used for the brick building toy. It created a line of bio-bricks that use sugar cane as one of the ingredients. It also is looking at recycled materials that are still as durable as normal LEGO bricks.
