Brunette, 49, was arrested Wednesday and charged with driving under the influence and disobeying a stop-yield sign, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Brunette played in the NHL for 16 seasons and was the interim head coach of the Florida Panthers in 2021-22 before joining the Devils this season, according to Hockey-Reference.com.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, a sheriff’s deputy was issuing Brunette’s golf cart a ticket for illegal parking in Deerfield Beach. According to a probable cause affidavit, the deputy observed Brunette leaving a bar “unsteady on his feet and talking with slurred speech.”

After issuing Brunette the citation, the deputy stated that he saw the coach leave the area driving a golf cart and observed him running through two stop signs, WPLG-TV reported.

The sheriff conducted a traffic stop, and when Brunette refused to take a breath test he was arrested, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Brunette posted bail several hours later, online records show.

The Devils last played Friday in Dallas and return to action after the All-Star break on Monday, according to The Athletic. The NFL’s All-Star Weekend is being held in the South Florida city of Sunrise, where the Panthers play their home games.

Brunette was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1993 but spent the majority of his career with the Minnesota Wild, The Athletic reported.
