A woman walked into the FDNY Rescue Company 1 around 9 p.m. and tried to leave a bag with one of the firefighters there, WNBC reported.

The firefighter went to get a supervisor and when he returned the woman had left the bag and was gone. A child wrapped in towels with her umbilical cord still attached was found inside the bag. The child was taken to a nearby hospital.

Authorities said the woman who left the child was in her 20s. Under state law people can safely drop off a child at fire and police stations or hospitals without fear of prosecution. A person leaving a child is not required to give their name.
